Recipients of 2005 GFOA Scholarships
The GFOA Scholarship Committee met recently to award the 2005 scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students preparing for careers in state and local government. Congratulations to all the recipients.
This year's recipient of the $10,000 Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship is Andrea Stenhoff, who will graduate in July with a MPA from the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She is currently a graduate assistant at the Maxwell School. While in this position she has conducted research on issues related to public sector restructuring and transparency in government. After graduation, she plans to obtain an analyst’s position with the New York State Division of the Budget. Funded by the Girard Miller Foundation.
The 2005 Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship of $3,500 is being awarded to Bongsun Cho-MacDonald, who will graduate next year with a degree in accounting from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has worked as an accountant with the Municipal Services Division of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations and plans to seek employment as a chartered accountant with the Nova Scotia provincial government.
This year, for the first time, there are co-recipients of the George A. Nielsen Public Investor Scholarship. Each of the individuals will be given an award of $2,500. In 2006, Irina Gladkov will receive her MBA in finance from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is currently an investment analyst with the Indiana Public Employees' Retirement Fund in Indianapolis. After graduation she plans to continue in her current position with the goal of progressing to a senior investment officer in a public employee retirement system.
The other co-recipient, Valerie K. Warner, is a graduate student in public policy at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She is currently the accounting/audit manager for the City of Springfield, Oregon. Her current responsibilities include certain aspects of the city's cash management and investing activities. After graduation, she plans to continue her career in state and local government finance with the goal of obtaining a finance director position where she can apply her investing experience and education.
This year’s recipient of the $5,000 Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship is Jimmie V. Kinder, a graduate student in business administration at San Francisco State University in California. After graduation, he plans to work in a finance position with the Yurok Tribe in Northern, California and has the goal of becoming the Tribe's chief financial officer. |
