Job Description: 

The City of Independence, Kansas is seeking a Director of Finance to be a key financial strategist for the City who will continue to support a collaborative and transparent organizational culture outstanding customer service, and on-going cost-effective municipal operations.

Located in SE Kansas, Independence, with a population of about 9,000, is the county seat of Montgomery County, and a premier location between Kansas City and Tulsa. Settled in 1869, Independence has a unique history, being home to Academy Award- winning screenwriter William Inge, the first outdoor baseball game with a permanent lighting system and was at one point the residence of Mickey Mantle. Independence is also home to Independence Community College (ICC), which was recently ranked as the number one community college in Kansas. ICC is also featured in the NETFLIX series, “Last Chance U.”

The City of Independence is a full-service city that operates under the Commission-Manager form of government. This at will position, serving at the pleasure of the City Manager, will be responsible for managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Finance Department, comprised of six employees. With an annual budget for FY2019 of approximately $21.8 million for all funds, and a General Fund budget of approximately $7.4 million, the Director of Finance will work closely with the City Manager and the Leadership Team to formulate and implement city-wide fiscal and administrative policies. Key responsibilities of this position are the management of all finance department functions, including budgeting, financial reporting and forecasting, accounting, risk management, and municipal court.

In addition to having eight years of increasingly responsible finance experience, including three years of proven experience supervising personnel and managing government finance and/or city administration, the ideal candidate for this position has an outgoing personality, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to customer service excellence. This position requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, public administration or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A master’s degree is preferred. The annual salary range for the Director of Finance is $55,289 to $80,169, dependent upon experience. The City also offers an attractive benefits package.
