Women’s Public Finance Network Annual Meeting and Luncheon
Minutes
May 22, 2011
 
Ms. Shirley Hughes, co-chair of the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Women’s Public Finance Network, welcomed all members and called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm on Sunday, May 22, 2011.  Ms. Hughes recognized Mr. Len Brittain and Ms. Linda Davidson (president and president-elect of the GFOA) who thanked the Women’s Network members for their active participation in the GFOA and for attending the annual conference.  They also encouraged members to apply for membership on the GFOA standing committees and the Executive Board.  Ms. Hughes also acknowledged the GFOA Executive Director Mr. Jeff Esser and staff liaison Ms. Barrie Tabin Berger.  

Ms. Kate Buch, co-chair of the Women’s Public Finance Network, called for a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting held in Washington, DC on January 20, 2011.  A motion to approve the minutes was made and adopted.   

Ms. Buch then introduced the Women’s Network guest speaker, Ms. Terry Brechtel, executive director of the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority in San Antonio, Texas and former City Manager for the City of San Antonio.  In her presentation, “Women on the Front Lines:  Effective Leadership – On and Off the Beaten Path,” Ms. Brechtel discussed her strategies for effective leadership, which included being an approachable manager who values the opinion of her staff, as well as standing up for important issues, even if they may be less than popular.  Ms. Brechtel noted that these lessons are usually learned on the job, and that new challenges provide opportunities to learn from prior mistakes.  

In conclusion, Co-Chair, Shirley Hughes, thanked the Segal Company for sponsoring the luncheon and adjourned the meeting at 1:25 p.m.
