Carla E. Sledge is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Charter County of Wayne Michigan the 15th largest county in the world. The county seat is Detroit. Wayne County has an annual budget of $2.1 billion and a population of approximately 1.8 million, making the county larger than 15 U.S. states.

Ms. Sledge provides financial and business leadership at the County through her dual role as CFO and the Director of Management and Budget. She directly serves the County’s Chief Executive Officer and routinely interacts with the 3,500 professional, administrative and union staff throughout the County. Her areas of expertise include finance, strategic planning, sustainability, risk management and information technology. In her financial, management, and leadership roles, she touches all aspects of government, including those at the state and federal levels.

During her tenure, she has implemented numerous comprehensive effectiveness programs, which resulted in cost containment improvements. One of her most significant achievements was the roll out of the County’s financial application that resolved budget needs, replaced outdated applications requiring extensive rework and created a fully integrated system capable of supporting a one customer process.

Prior to joining the County, Ms. Sledge developed her financial and communication skills through her nine years of experience at the Detroit office of Deloitte as an audit manager. At Deloitte, Carla managed engagements in government, manufacturing and the non-profit industries.


Corporate Board Interface: During her twenty five years in the world of finance, Ms. Sledge has served as chair on many non-profit boards. She is credited with initiating and implementing a strategic plan for the Michigan Government Finance Officers Association. Ms. Sledge has served as an officer on other boards and chaired many of its committees, including the executive compensation and nominating committees. Currently, Ms. Sledge is an advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Ms. Sledge is engaged as co-organizer, chair, and invited speaker of various accounting conferences. Her leadership, integrity, and reputation for commitment to excellence are recognized and admired across Government and Industry. Some of her achievements include a 1999 National Association of Black Accountants Award for Achievement in Government, a 2001 Award for Detroit’s 30 Most Influential Women, the 2006 AICPA and MACPA Outstanding CPA in Government Award and Crain’s Detroit Business 2011 CFO Award. She has been featured in many magazines and other media, including the 2007 and 2012 Editions of Who’s Who in Black Detroit. Ms. Sledge is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, has participated in continuing education in finance, accounting, ethics and corporate governance. She lives in Franklin, Michigan with her husband, Willie.
