Project Timeline

The project began in March 2013 and is slated to complete in February 2015. Below is an approximate timeline of key milestones of the project:

February 2013: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awards the GFOA with a grant to develop resource alignment best practices for education budgeting.

March 2013 – June 2013: During the first months of the project, GFOA will focus primarily on research and development. GFOA will work closely with our external partners to review the best research in the field; we will organize our internal resources and develop communication strategies; we will begin designing the Partners in Practice pilot program and award criteria; and will launch a project website and to keep our stakeholders informed.

June 30th, 2013: Applications are due for the Partners in Practice pilot program.

July 11th, 2013: Symposium to review draft best practices. Open to the public, see Get Involved page for details and to request more information.

July 2013: Best practices finalized following symposium; Partners in Practice pilot groups finalized. We will select five public school districts and five community colleges to participate.

August 2013 – September 2014: Partners in Practice program conducted to test best practices and award criteria. The program will include an orientation, working closely during the true budget process, as well as a review and evaluation phase.

October 2014:
Launch of the revised criteria for the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for Schools! After we’ve completed our review of the pilot program and made any necessary enhancements, the criteria will be available for the 2016-2017 budgeting cycle.
