Each year since 1986, GFOA has conducted the Advanced Government Finance Institute, an
intensive week-long program that provides GFOA members from across the United States and
Canada an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and focus on emerging trends within
the public finance community.
The five-day program, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of
Business, gathers top academic instructors along with government officials and private-sector
specialists to provide 50 qualified attendees with a unique opportunity to address big picture issues
facing public finance today, including:
• strategic planning
• global and national economic trends
• relationships with the media
• technology trends
• organizational leadership
Additionally, attendees may participate in a special “Issues in Accounting” seminar led by
Stephen Gauthier. The Institute also offers personal and team-building leadership training.
The week-long program affords participants many networking opportunities with their peers,
an element that enhances the program experience, both professionally and personally.
