Darrel Thomas is the assistant city manager and chief financial officer in Weston, Florida. His role involves directly managing the city’s cash management, risk management, payroll, and benefits; overseeing the city’s accounting, budget, and long-range financial planning activities; building code and code enforcement operations; overseeing information technology services; and supporting the city manager.
Thomas joined GFOA in 2007. He currently serves on GFOA’s Committee on Treasury and Investment Management. In 2013, he participated in GFOA’s Advanced Government Finance Institute. He has also spoken at past GFOA annual conferences and training sessions, and has been a reviewer for GFOA’s Awards for Excellence in Government Finance.
When asked about surprises in his career, Thomas said that everything has surprised him. “My only expectations coming out of college were to work hard and represent my family well. It’s all been a wonderful surprise.”
Outside of work, Thomas likes to play basketball and stay active with his kids, family, and friends.
