Controller

The City of Sunrise, Florida, is seeking a forward-thinking Controller to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the City’s accounting and financial reporting operations. This executive role ensures fiscal integrity, compliance with accounting standards, and the delivery of transparent, high-quality financial information to support decision-making at all levels of government.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Finance and Administrative Services, the Controller is responsible for managing the City’s accounting team, overseeing internal controls, and coordinating the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). The position also plays a key role in the annual audit process and in shaping long-term financial policies and procedures that enhance accountability and operational efficiency.

KEY RESPONSIBILIITES:

• Direct and coordinate citywide accounting operations, including general ledger, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Develop, implement, and monitor accounting policies and internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with GAAP and GASB.
• Lead and mentor a team of professional accountants, promoting high performance and professional development.
• Oversee the preparation of the ACFR and act as the primary liaison with external auditors.
• Collaborate with departments and executive leadership on fiscal strategies, budget planning, and data-driven financial analysis.
• Drive process improvements and technology integration to streamline financial operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• Considerable professional experience in governmental accounting, including supervisory experience.
• CPA designation required.
• Comprehensive understanding of municipal finance, governmental accounting principles, and audit procedures.
• Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly and effectively.
