Job Description

Washington County is now seeking our next Controller.  Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is a key finance management position with responsibility over accounting operations, management accounting, treasury, and financial reporting for Washington County. The Controller will manage, supervise, and coordinate the work of others, and will have program or project oversight responsibilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Washington County Finance Department provides financial management services supporting twenty-one departments across five functional areas of operations: General Government; Public Safety and Justice; Land Use and Transportation; Housing, Health, and Human Services; and Culture, Education, and Recreation. The Finance Department coordinates the annual budget process, oversees management accounting activities, supports operational transactions and manages cash flow, banking, and investment activities. Procurement services and personal property disposition are also managed within the Department.  

Our ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background and extensive experience in government or public sector setting. They will set consistent accounting procedures County wide, establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy of financial statements. They have experience leading a team of accounting professionals in a complex organization with a comparably sized budget. As a leader in an internal service department, they are customer service focused and will develop positive relationships across the County.  While not required, previous experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system such as Workday is helpful for success in this role.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance Administration, or a closely related field, including training in accounting, public sector budgeting, payroll administration, investments, and/or finance administration; AND Four (4) years of work experience in related fields which includes at least two (2) years of work experience in a supervisory or lead role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • License as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance.

Additional Qualifications:

  • A comprehensive background check which includes a credit history report.
  • Must have the ability to arrange for timely transportation in order to attend required appointments and meetings at off-site locations.
