The City of San Mateo Finance Department is looking for highly qualified, experienced Accounting Manager
Why Join our Department? This is a management-level position responsible for managing, directing, coordinating and participating in the City’s general accounting functions. This position directly reports to the department head and is a member of the management team that sets the direction for the department.
What You’ll Do • Act as primary liaison for annual City audit; prepare and provide supporting documentation; ensure that audit is scheduled and completed in a timely manner • Recommend goals and objectives; assist in the development of and implement policies, and procedures relating to accounting, auditing, and budgeting activities • Plan, assign, schedule and review the work of assigned personnel • Direct the technical accounting aspects of the preparation and processing of accounts payable • Establish and maintain journals, ledgers and supporting financial records; supervise the maintenance of the General Ledger; supervise the recording of all revenue, encumbrances and disbursements • Develop and administer accounting and budget control systems as necessary to comply with accounting procedures, laws, ordinance and other regulations • Review, develop and modify accounting methods and internal auditing controls to improve effectiveness of existing procedures, and to insure conformance with existing policies • Lead and mentor the members of your staff and contribute to their professional development • For a complete list of duties, reference our job specifications at www.cityofsanmateo.org
Who You Are • You possess knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles; general and municipal accounting and auditing principles and practices; and principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation • You possess ability to analyze and interpret financial and accounting records; examine, prepare and verify financial statements, reports and documents; prepare complex financial statements, reports and analyses; develop and implement modified and new accounting procedures and systems. • You possess a desire to contribute to a positive work environment that fosters motivation and engagement in our workforce.
What You Bring • You possess at least five years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting or auditing work, including two years in a supervisory capacity • You have the equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, business administration, or related field
Bonus Points (highly desirable) • CPA or CPFO is desired but not required.

Interview Process All applications, résumés (required) and supplemental questionnaires received will be reviewed for minimum qualifications. A limited number of the most highly qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process which may consist of an oral panel interview, tentatively scheduled for November 30, 2017.
An eligible list will be established for those who pass the examination process. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least 6 months with the possibility of an extension for an additional 6 months. Once placed on an eligible list, and at the time a vacancy occurs, eligible candidates may be contacted by the hiring department and scheduled for additional department interviews.
