The City of Denton operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The Mayor and six-member Council are elected for two-year terms; four members are elected by District and the two remaining seats plus the Mayor are elected at-large. Operating as a full service municipality, in addition to standard municipal governmental services, Denton also operates with several major enterprise operations including Airport, Electric, Water, Wastewater, Solid Waste, and Drainage. The Fiscal Year (FY) 2016-2017 proposed budget includes funding for 1,638.5 full-time equivalents (FTEs) and has an overall operating and capital budget of $1.19 billion. The City Auditor, prescribed by the City Charter, is appointed by the Council. The position requires a Master’s degree in business or public administration, accounting, or a related field with a minimum of five years managerial experience in internal or external audit, preferably in a governmental setting. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, political science or a related field must have a minimum of ten years managerial experience in internal or external audit. The candidate’s background and experience should include a diverse exposure to all aspects of auditing, to include internal audits, external audits and compliance reviews. Certification as an Internal Auditor is strongly preferred.
