Hints for More Sustainable Communities

Municipalities’ plans for sustainability vary widely, but there are a number of steps most local governments can take to improve their strategies for urban development, according to Triple Pundit. These center around energy (creating incentives for reduced energy consumption, tax subsidies for using green technologies such as solar panels, and dynamic energy pricing to cut demand during peak periods); transportation (adding bike lanes, raising tolls to reduce driving); construction (update building codes to reflect climate-specific best practice, encourage the use of local building materials, make building code updates clear, implement a minimum greenspace-to-building ratio); and commerce (watching carbon footprints, investigating the use of local 3D printing for some energy-intensive goods, creating an urban garden network to increase the supply of local food).
