Interest and involvement in urban governments and issues related to service provision and sustainability.
This training is intended for those who work for urban governments or those with interest in urban issues. The instructor will discuss current trends in urban America and also the future of cities and how cities can be leveraged to help overcome some of the most pressing issues our society currently faces.
In A Country of Cities, author Vishaan Chakrabarti, Founder; Practice for Architecture and Urbanism and Associate Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, argues that well-designed cities are the key to solving America's great national challenges: environmental degradation, unsustainable consumption, economic stagnation, rising public health costs and decreased social mobility. In this webinar, Professor Chakrabarti will convey how wise development of our cities in the future can be the force leading us into a new era of progressive and prosperous stewardship for the US. Professor Chakrabarti will provide a wealth of information about cities, suburbs and exurbs, looking at how they developed across the 50 states and their roles in prosperity and globalization, sustainability and resilience, and also heath and joy.
Professor Chakrabarti will make the case for how both job opportunities and an improved, sustainable environment are truly within our means by intelligently increasing the density of our cities and building the transit systems, schools, parks and other infrastructure to support them. In this call for a more urban America, he will illustrate his argument with numerous infographics illustrating provocative statistics on issues as disparate as rising childhood obesity rates, ever-lengthening automobile commutes and government subsidies that favor highways over mass transit. The webinar will conclude with a question and answer session for participants.
