Robotic process automation (RPA) is not new, but many finance professionals are still not sure what it really looks like in day-to-day work. Governments continue to rely on staff to enter invoices, move data between systems, reconcile accounts, and prepare routine reports, even when those tasks follow the same steps every time. The result is busy teams, long cycle times, and limited capacity for analysis and service improvements.
This session will walk through practical RPA use cases in the finance office, including invoice routing and approval workflows in accounts payable, cash application and collections in accounts receivable, bank and ledger reconciliations, and recurring journal entries and revenue postings.
Speakers will explain how to analyze processes for RPA potential, document current processes, and design workflows that preserve internal controls and audit trails. The session will also explore how finance can work with IT and vendors, navigate internal change management issues, and measure results.
Learning Objectives
- Describe what robotic process automation is and how it applies to common finance and accounting processes in government
- Discuss specific use cases for RPA in areas such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and journal entries, and how to evaluate which processes are good candidates for automation
- Identify practical steps for planning and governing an RPA initiative, including process selection, internal control considerations, measurement of results, and coordination with IT and vendors
