Hype is everywhere with artificial intelligence (AI) and organizations are being told that AI is the future and they must adapt or be left behind. However, buying into inflated expectations also makes it extremely difficult to gain traction and begin to achieve actual return on AI investments. While AI provides practically unlimited potential for productivity improvements, it also brings risk, and a level of organizational disruption that may not be desired in all cases.

Speakers in this session will discuss how to get started with AI in low-risk business applications and how to approach AI policies and the unintended consequences of AI from a management perspective. What happens to internal controls, the quality and security of data, views of fairness, or the public’s sense of trust when using AI? This session will highlight real-world case studies from governments that took different strategic approaches to AI and provide lessons learned for others just beginning their AI journey.

Learning Objectives

  • Determine your organization’s current state of data quality, technology infrastructure, and staff capabilities to identify strengths and gaps that may affect AI adoption
  • Identify practical AI use cases at each stage of adoption, and distinguish between tools suited for quick wins (e.g., text editing) and tools that require more investment to achieve strategic value
  • Recognize the high-level policy, ethics, and governance that leaders must address to ensure responsible and trustworthy AI use in the public sector
