Polarization is a key feature of today’s political landscape, even at the local level. It can limit government leaders from reaching their full potential, and, worse, it reduces everyone's ability to serve the community and solve problems. When faced with challenges like this, leaders must strive to respond in a deliberate, collaborative, and mature manner, and avoid emotional arguments that create winners and losers, weaken trust, and damage relationships.
This session will explore how leaders can increase their effectiveness and overcome challenges posed by polarization by focusing on their values, understanding opposing views, committing fully to their roles, and connecting with others.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss how establishing and strengthening your convictions can make you a better leader
- Describe how different behaviors, such as adopting a growth mindset and establishing boundaries, affect a leader’s ability to commit to their role
- Implement strategies to develop stronger connections with your colleagues
