Managing a government's finances should be about more than making sure the bills are paid on time and that revenues are greater than expenditures. Ultimately, the purpose of public finance is to ensure that governments are providing services and programs that enhance the quality of life for everyone in the community.

At this session, which is sponsored by GFOA's Black Caucus, attendees will learn about the Public Finance Initiative, a fiscally sponsored nonprofit organization of TSNE Mission Works, to advance this approach to public finance decision-making. Speakers will present examples of how local governments are embedding values into their financial decision-making to drive positive change in their communities and give advice on how governments can move in this direction.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore examples of how governments are embedding values in public finance decision-making
  • Discuss the importance of connecting public finance decisions to community goals and outcomes
