Director of Finance and Accounting
The Director of Finance & Accounting position, reporting to the Board of County Commissioners, is a full-time, exempt role with primary responsibilities involving the management and operation of the Finance Department. The role requires overseeing the financial systems and operations of the county, including the preparation of the county’s annual budget, management of accounting records, and financial reporting. Key duties involve compliance with GAAP, GASB, and GAAS standards, managing revenue projections, and overseeing sales tax collections and debt financing. The position supervises payroll and accounts payable functions, maintains accounting records, and prepares financial statements and reports. The role demands a high level of independence in performing duties and making decisions affecting the county’s financial health. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field, with a Master's preferred, and at least four years of relevant experience, particularly in government finance. A CPA certification is also preferred. The position also requires passing a background check and potentially involves travel.

This position administers and performs a variety of complex professional and technical functions necessary to maintain the financial systems and operations of the County. Manage the maintenance of Custer County accounting records and preparation of financial accounting reports and statements. Direct external and internal financial accounting and reporting, operations, debt financing, and monitoring sales tax collection functions. Serve as the financial advisor to the Board of County Commissioners and other county department directors and officials. This position reports To the Board of County Commissioners. County Commissioners are elected from one of three geographic districts for four-year staggered terms. The Board establishes the vision and sets the direction for the county government and for future challenges that face the County. The Board provides leadership to County operations through adoptions of the budget which includes all departments, commissions and other spending agencies funded by County appropriations, including law enforcement and human services.
