A Day in the Life of a GFOA Intern

When our interns are not working on GFOA projects, they’re out in the field getting a behind-the-scenes look at how local government works.

Last Friday, interns Tochi Madueke, Manuela Sasot, and Skyler Albert visited the Village of Flossmoor, a small municipality doing big things with capital projects, financial management, and service delivery.

During the visit, interns sat down with staff from the administrative, finance, and public works departments, where they learned about cash receipting, utility billing, capital project planning, cross-jurisdictional collaboration/resource sharing, creative revenue generation, and technology as infrastructure in local government.

Following the discussion, interns visited Flossmoor’s multi-phase Viaduct Flood Control Project, one of the Village's major ongoing infrastructure projects, supported by a substantial amount of federal and state grants (worth roughly $8 million).

Flossmoor’s approach to long-term capital planning, shared services, and community engagement gave our interns a clear example of what thoughtful and resilient public finance looks like on the ground.

Many thanks to the Village of Flossmoor team (Village Manager Bridget Wachtel, Finance Director Ann Novoa,  Assistant Finance Director Malea Calvert, and Public Works Director John Brunke) for such an insightful and welcoming experience!
