After earning my Master's Degree in Accounting, I was determined to achieve credentials that would propel me into leadership positions and elevate my standing as an accounting professional. As the Deputy Finance Director for the Town of Abingdon, Virginia, pursuing the CPFO credential became a natural choice. This designation, tailored for those in government or public sector finance, not only sharpened my technical financial expertise but also reinforced my credibility as a leader in government finance.
What did you learn going through the process?
Going through the CPFO credential process taught me much more than just technical knowledge, it deepened my understanding of the unique complexities and responsibilities involved in public sector financial management. I gained a broader perspective on strategic budgeting, long-term financial planning, internal controls, and financial reporting standards specific to government entities.
How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?
Obtaining the CPFO designation has had a significant impact on my professional trajectory. Earning this certification resulted in a promotion from an accounting position to Deputy Director of Finance for our town. Completing the CPFO program has also validated my technical expertise in public finance, enhanced my ability to navigate complex financial challenges and provided me with the tools to make informed, data-driven decisions.
What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?
The CPFO journey takes time, effort, and a whole lot of patience, however if you stick with it, the sense of accomplishment and what it does for your career is totally worth it.
