Andrea Lamberg, CPFO, is finance director for Village of Oswego, Illinois.

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I pursued the CPFO designation because, as a senior member of management, I believe it’s essential to lead by example and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in public finance. Earning this credential showcases my advanced knowledge of all key areas of public finance and reinforces to our stakeholders that the Village of Oswego is managed with the highest level of expertise and professionalism. More importantly, I want our residents to have confidence and peace of mind knowing their local government is staffed by highly qualified professionals who are dedicated to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public resources.

What did you learn going through the process?

Going through the CPFO certification process was both rigorous and rewarding. It strengthened my technical knowledge across all key areas of public finance. It helped me think more strategically about how to align financial practices with long-term community goals. As Finance Director for the Village of Oswego, the CPFO process has made me a more effective leader.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

It gave me new tools and frameworks for improving financial sustainability, enhancing policy analysis, and supporting evidence-based decision making. Ultimately, its elevated the value I bring to the Village, ensuring that our financial operations not only  meet professional standards but also serve the broader goals of our community.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Becoming a CPFO is one of the most valuable steps you can take in your public finance career. Whether you are a new accountant just starting out or a seasoned finance director with years of experience, the program provides a deep and comprehensive understanding of all key areas of public finance. In reinforces foundational concepts while also challenging you to think strategically and apply best practices. It’s a meaningly investment in your professional growth and in the financial health of the organization your serve.
