CPFO Spotlight: Dalton Larson
Dalton Larson, CPFO, is the deputy director of Finance for Anoka County, Minnesota
Why did you want to become a CPFO?
I pursued the CPFO designation to challenge myself and pursue meaningful personal and professional development. This program allowed me to validate and deepen my knowledge across multiple areas of government finance where I’ve gained experience, while also pushing me to grow in areas I was less familiar with. On a personal level, it helped me strengthen my time management skills, discipline, and motivation/perseverance; especially while balancing the demands of my full-time role. Earning this certification reflects my commitment to continuous learning and to serving my organization with the highest level of competence and integrity.
What did you learn going through the process?
The CPFO program offers a robust and comprehensive look into every major area of government finance. I was especially challenged and grew the most in the areas of debt management and treasury and investment management, which I had limited exposure to in my previous government roles. Learning and applying the concepts in these areas required more than just memorizing terms; it pushed me to truly understand the material at a deeper level and apply it. The process of reading, studying, and testing on the material has expanded my skill set and will serve me well as I take on broader responsibilities in my career.
How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?
As a newly designated CPFO, I look forward to seeing how the knowledge and skills I’ve gained through the program will benefit the organizations I serve. I hope to apply this expertise to help improve financial decision-making, strengthen internal best practices, and contribute positively to the community I serve. I also plan to be an advocate for the program; by promoting its value and supporting prospective CPFOs in the GFOA community. I see this as not just a credential to be gained, but a platform for continued learning, growth, leadership, and collaboration in government finance.
What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?
I encourage anyone considering the CPFO designation to take that next step. This program offers tremendous value, not only in terms of technical knowledge but also in personal and professional growth. Challenge yourself to learn, to expand your skill set, and to take steps in your career in government finance. While it may be difficult or demanding, you’ll find the journey is more than worth the effort. If anyone ever has questions or wants to talk about the process, I’m always happy to share my experience, study tips, and help however I can.
