1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I have been working in governmental finance and budget roles for my entire career and I just felt it would be a great opportunity to absorb the full body of knowledge available and how different areas intersect and really deepen my understanding.

2. What did you learn going through the process?

Much of the information I knew on a high level just through doing the work, enough to get the immediate project completed. I learned a lot of the why’s behind what we do – particularly as it pertains to reporting, continuity and maintaining clear processes.

3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

I feel much more confident that I know where to look to find the information I may need and less intimidated by the volume of information. Doing research on something new can be daunting but I feel much informed now than before.

4. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

I think this is meaningful for anyone wanting a career in government finance. There are sections that were more relevant than others to my specific role, but it’s important to have a basic understanding of those points of intersection with procurement , investments/bonds and payroll, etc.
