Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I wanted to become a CPFO to strengthen my foundation in public finance and demonstrate a strong commitment to professional excellence. Public finance is continually evolving, and earning the CPFO designation helped me confirm my expertise, stay current with best practices, and better support both my organization and the community we serve.

What did you learn going through the process?

The CPFO process significantly deepened my understanding of core public finance functions, including budgeting, accounting, debt management, treasury operations, and financial reporting. Beyond the technical aspects, it also reinforced the importance of strategic thinking, ethical decision-making, and maintaining transparency and accountability in public finance.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

Becoming a CPFO has strengthened my confidence and credibility as a public finance professional. It has helped me approach challenges with a more analytical and well-rounded perspective, communicate more effectively with stakeholders, and contribute more meaningfully to organizational decision-making. Our department has experienced significant change in recent years, and holding the CPFO designation provides an added level of confidence for the organization. I also expect it will continue to create opportunities for professional growth and leadership.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

I would strongly encourage anyone considering the CPFO designation to pursue it. While the process requires commitment and discipline, it is very rewarding. The knowledge gained, professional recognition, and sense of accomplishment make it a worthwhile investment in both your career and the public you serve.
