CPFO Spotlight: Hope Torres

CPFO Spotlight: Hope Torres

Hope Torres, CPFO, is an accountant for Genesee County Water and Waste Services in Michigan.

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I came from a retail/business background, so the career change to serving in the public sector has been a huge learning experience. I have a business/marketing degree, which is more tailored to the private sector. Being new in this field, I wanted to become a CPFO to build and advance my skills and knowledge in governmental subjects so that I can obtain the most success in my position and continue to advance in the field.

What did you learn going through the process?

I learned quickly that government finance is extremely detailed. There will always be something to learn along the way, even after completing this program. Laws constantly change, updates are made, and it is extremely important that accountants, finance directors, and staff have the knowledge and capability to adapt to such changes. This profession requires constant education and training. You must be disciplined in research and study in order to be successful long term. This designation was an investment well worth the work.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

Becoming a CPFO has given me the confidence to know that I can be successful in this new profession. I have done the work successfully to be able to positively impact my organization. I think that having the access to the continuing education resources and training available to me with the CPFO designation will play an important role in the future of the organization I work for.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Do it!! I don’t believe there is a better program out there to prepare you for a career in public finance. Even if you are experienced in this field, the program offers so much for all levels to learn from. You could rush through the program, but I encourage anyone going through this to make the most of it. Learn as much as you possibly can! You never know when you’re going to need it.
