CPFO Spotlight: Kristyn Unrein

CPFO Spotlight: Kristyn Unrein

Kristyn June Unrein, CPFO, is the finance director for the Town of Johnstown, Colorado

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

The CPFO designation is a prestigious designation for those of us focusing our careers in the public finance sector. I admired it being held by some of my best mentors, peers, and friends for many years. For me, achieving this designation demonstrates my commitment to the public finance profession and sets an example as a leader for lifelong learning.

What did you learn going through the process?

While going through the process, I learned many new technical facets from the various exam categories which I had not been exposed to yet in my career. I am looking forward to my continued understanding and application of these technical areas in my future. The exposure to the GFOA Best Practices also highlighted applicable insight which I also look forward to referencing and implementing.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

The CPFO designation is a valuable opportunity to learn and grow, professionally and personally. Set milestone goals that work for you, stay dedicated, and lean on the resources/networking provided through the GFOA CPFO Community.
