CPFO Spotlight: Nate Romero

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I knew it would be a great opportunity to gain different perspectives from experts in different fields of government finance. Additionally, I was aware that after completion, I would acquire tools to enhance my skills and perform my job better in all fields of government finance.

What did you learn going through the process?

I learned a little bit about each of the subject areas that I didn’t know before. Additionally, I learned about the full breadth and scope of the partnership, assistance, training, and leadership GFOA provides to local governments and their staff.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

Having the background and knowledge afforded by the CPFO certification will allow me to contribute better suggestions and ask better questions when decisions are being made. The knowledge, skills and tools gained will also allow me to guide and lead my team more effectively.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

If you work in a government finance office, this certification is invaluable to successfully and thoroughly understand topics and challenges that local governments face. It also reinforces how important government finance offices are to building trust with our respective communities.
