I wanted to strengthen my skills and knowledge in public finance so I could better serve my district. The CPFO felt like the right way to validate what I’ve learned and push myself to grow.
What did you learn going through the process?
The process reinforced the importance of integrating technical skills with a broader understanding of policy, ethics, and long-term financial planning. While I was already comfortable with budgeting, accounting, and reporting, preparing for the CPFO expanded my understanding of areas like debt management, investments, and pension obligations. I also gained a renewed appreciation for best practices, internal controls, and how to communicate financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?
Becoming a CPFO has enhanced my credibility as a trusted financial professional and opened doors for more meaningful contributions in decision-making. It signals to colleagues, leadership, and the community that I am committed to excellence and continuous learning. I believe it will also allow me to take on a stronger leadership role in shaping financial strategies that support both fiscal stability and program growth.
What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?
Go for it. It’s challenging, but you’ll come out with a deeper understanding of public finance and a stronger professional network. It’s an investment in yourself and the people you serve.
