1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I wanted to become a CPFO because the program aligns with my commitment to self-improvement and professional development to better serve my community. I’m a strong believer in the importance of having a growth mindset. The broad focus of the certification ensured I had an opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone to learn about technical topics and fundamentals I was not regularly exposed to during my daily job duties. Successfully completing the certification shows my colleagues, community, and future career opportunities the value I’m able to bring to an organization.

2. What did you learn going through the process?

I felt that going through the CPFO program improved my ability to think about the different topics in government accounting as interrelated systems within the broader organization. Without financial resources, an organization is unable to provide programs and services in the community. The knowledge and ability to communicate how budgeting, contracts and procurement, payroll, treasury management, risk management, financial reporting, and more all come together as a symphony to align financial resources with strategy is vital toward achieving success.

3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

I feel becoming a CPFO helps build upon the trust I have with my colleagues when working toward solutions to financial challenges. I’m able to speak on a broad range of government accounting subjects more confidently.

4. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

If you’re interested in broadening your technical skills and abilities in government accounting, I highly recommend enrolling in the CPFO program. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about an incredibly broad and diverse range of subjects in addition to access to great training resources and materials.
