CPFO Spotlight: Tiffany Wood

CPFO Spotlight: Tiffany Wood

Tiffany Wood, CPFO, is the senior manager II, outreach & compliance, for Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia

Why did you want to become a CPFO?

Prior to enrolling in the CPFO program, I was at a point in my career where I wanted to deepen my financial and accounting expertise.  I began researching different certification programs that would help me expand and build upon my current competencies.  I was having trouble finding the right fit. I mentioned this to a mentor and they recommended I explore the CPFO program. Most certification programs focus on one area (e.g. accounting, project management, etc.) After reviewing the CPFO program guide, I realized this certification was exactly what I was looking for to enhance my skill set! I was truly intrigued by the variety of content areas covered.

What did you learn going through the process?

As a finance professional for a public school division, the whole process helped me think outside of my financial comfort zone. I appreciated gaining knowledge and exposure to content areas such as debt management and investment management that are outside of my realm of responsibility.

How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession or how do you hope it will make an impact?

One of the biggest impacts has been inspiring other staff in the office to pursue the CPFO program.

What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Go ahead and enroll!  The program is definitely a worthwhile investment for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of local government and financial operations.
