On November 21, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) published guidance for employees to deduct qualified overtime compensation from federally taxable income, also known as “no tax on overtime,” beginning in 2025. This new, temporary deduction will have significant implications for government finance officers as governmental entities are one of our nation’s largest employers and adhere to a combination of federal, state and local regulations on overtime pay. Although the IRS has published guidance providing employers relief in reporting qualified overtime compensation for federal tax year 2025, it will still be important for employers to provide employees with estimates of qualified overtime this year. During this webinar, GFOA's Federal Liaison Center team will walk attendees through the new guidance and what government employers should know about this new deduction both this year and in the years ahead.
