What is Learning Pathways?

Learning Pathways is GFOA’s new professional development tool designed to help you chart your career journey. It allows you to explore public finance roles, complete self-assessments, and receive personalized learning recommendations based on your experience and goals.

How do I access Learning Pathways?

Visit the Learning Pathways website at learningpathways.gfoa.org and log in using your GFOA credentials. Once logged in, complete your profile, take the self-assessment, and start exploring your personalized recommendations.

Who can access Learning Pathways?

Learning Pathways is a free resource available to both GFOA members and non-members. Simply log in using your GFOA username and password to get started. It you don't have an account, you can create one for free.

How does the self-assessment work?

The self-assessment helps you evaluate your current skills and identify areas for growth. Your results are compared to industry standards for your current role or roles you aspire to, giving you a clear, personalized learning roadmap.

What kinds of career areas are included?

The first two available pathways are Accounting and Budgeting, with additional areas of public finance coming soon.

How will Learning Pathways help my career?

The tool connects your personal career goals with GFOA’s trusted resources—training, best practices, publications, and networking opportunities—so you can strengthen your expertise and prepare for new opportunities in public finance.

Do I need to complete the entire pathway at once?

No. Learning Pathways is flexible and designed to fit your schedule. You can complete assessments, explore roles, or return to your recommendations anytime. Upon completion of your self-assessment, you will have the opportunity to create a personalized learning plan based on GFOA learning resources that address the gaps that identified through the assessment process. As you complete the resources, you can go back into your profile and remove them from your learning plan.

Can my employer use Learning Pathways for staff development?

Yes. Many governments and finance offices use Learning Pathways to support employee development, identify training needs, and plan succession strategies.

Is my self-assessment data confidential?

Yes. Your results are private and used only to generate your personalized learning recommendations. GFOA does not share individual data.
