GFOA Scholarship Spotlight: Andrea Dutton
Andrea received $10,000 through the Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship.
Andrea Dutton currently serves as a Senior Accountant for Cucamonga Valley Water District, where she has worked for 7 years. Her first job out of college led her to discover a love for accounting. Her second interest was government, which developed after she started working for a school district where she learned about government accounting and finance. She discovered her passion while serving in a role that positively impacts her community. She started her Master’s in Accountancy program in the fall of 2024 and plans to graduate in December 2025.
Andrea is married to a CalFire Battalion Chief (they joke that he is the fire, and she is the water) and has two children, boys aged 5 and 3. Life is very busy, but she is happy to have the support of her family and her district, both encouraging her pursuit of continued education and career advancement.
Q & A with Anne
Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?
I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Accounting at Azuza Pacific University. I have worked in the accounting field since graduating in 2013 from CSUSB. I chose to go back to school to deepen my understanding of accounting principles, compliance, and ethical decision-making, which are critical for roles in public and government accounting. Additionally, a Master’s in Accounting helps prepare for professional certifications like the CPA, enhancing career opportunities and credibility in the field.
What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?
I am currently working at Cucamonga Valley Water District, located in Rancho Cucamonga, California as a Senior Accountant. I have been with the district since 2018 and have gained a vast amount of knowledge about government finance. Government agencies operate under unique financial constraints and regulatory frameworks, making it essential to understand fund accounting, grant management, and financial transparency. This specialization is particularly valuable for ensuring accountability, efficiency, and ethical stewardship of public funds.
What are your future career goals?
I hope for continued career advancement and learning opportunities. My next goal is to attain a CPA certification after the competition of my Master's.
How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?
The GFOA Government Finance Officers Association scholarship will play a crucial role in helping me achieve my career goals in a government agency, by providing both financial support and valuable networking and learning opportunities. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity from GFOA and the Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship and I am excited about my future in government contributing back to the community.
