GFOA Scholarship Spotlight: Geoffry Brown

Geoffrey received $10,000 through The Clark Burrus Public Service Academic Scholarship.

Geoffry Brown is an emerging leader in public administration with a passion for local government and community service, rooted in a family legacy of public service. He currently serves as the Budget and Purchasing Specialist for the City of Shawnee, Kansas, where he contributes to municipal budgeting, financial reporting, and departmental improvement initiatives.

Geoffry earned a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in Business and Public Administration from the University of Kansas, where he demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership and civic engagement. He served as President of the Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Senator for the Black Student Union, and currently serves as the Treasurer for the Kansas District of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

With a passion for public finance, policy analysis, and organizational leadership, Geoffry has built a strong foundation in municipal management and continues to seek opportunities to innovate and improve service delivery in local government.

Q & A with Geoffrey

Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?

I am currently studying to earn my MPA from the University of Kansas School of Public Affairs and Administration, with an emphasis on Local and County Management.

What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?

I currently work at the City of Shawnee, Kansas, as the Budget and Purchasing Specialist. I also volunteer as the District Treasurer for the Kansas District of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 

What are your future career goals?

As an aspiring City Manager, my lifelong commitment is to continuously learn from others and the world around me. Today’s experiences are helping me prepare for the rigors and responsibilities of a City Manager. As a public servant, I am dedicated to upholding financial transparency and sustainability. I am confident that with time and dedication, I will be able to effectively and efficiently pursue these objectives.
