GFOA Scholarship Spotlight: Iliana Burgos
Iliana received $10,000 through the Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship.
Iliana Burgos is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in Finance at East Texas A&M University. She is a first-generation American, as her mother immigrated to the United States from Mexico. With six years of experience working in local government, including roles with the City of Garland and the City of Rowlett, she has gained invaluable insight into municipal operations. Her time in local government not only shaped her professional journey but also inspired her to continue her education and pursue a deeper understanding of business and finance.
Q & A with Iliana
Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?
I’m pursuing a bachelor’s in finance at East Texas A&M University. I chose this degree because, while working for the City of Rowlett, I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying financial and accounting principles to better serve the public sector.
What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?
After completing my education, I look forward to returning to the public sector to continue my career, serving my community and contributing to the significant financial growth of my local municipality.
What are your future career goals?
I spent three years working in the accounting department for the City of Rowlett. With this degree and my experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into economic development, which I hope to bring back to my local municipality. As Rowlett continues to grow, I aim to leverage my education to contribute to the city's rapid development while managing risks. Ultimately, I aspire to one day become the Finance Director, where my impact can be most meaningful.
How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?
I am honored to receive the GFOA’s Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship. As a full-time student, this scholarship will significantly alleviate my financial burdens. It will also help me distinguish myself from my peers in the job market, ultimately paving the way for me to become a Finance Director. Furthermore, the GFOA membership offers valuable networking opportunities and access to educational resources that will further support my career growth.
