GFOA Scholarship Spotlight: Jaleesa Kee

Jaleesa received $10,000 through the Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship.

Jaleesa Kee is a recreation program coordinator for the City of Portsmouth, Virginia where she oversees the planning, implementation, and budgeting of after-school programs across multiple school sites and recreation centers. She earned her bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies from Norfolk State University, where she served as captain of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team and led her team to a national championship. She is dedicated to strengthening public services and continues to seek opportunities to create meaningful, lasting impact in her community.

With a dedicated focus on community development and innovation, Jaleesa continues to build a strong professional foundation, constantly seeking new opportunities to enhance public services and create lasting positive impacts within the community. 

Q & A with Jaleesa 

Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?

I am currently pursuing a master of public administration at Old Dominion University. I chose this path to deepen my expertise in public service and to better serve my community through my current role as a recreation program coordinator with the City of Portsmouth.  

What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?

I am currently serving in local government as a recreation program coordinator for the City of Portsmouth, and I hope to continue working in local government throughout my career. 

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals involve transitioning into a leadership position within parks and recreation to design impactful after-school initiatives for local youth. I aim to be innovative and improve the essential services provided to the community.   

How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?

The Jeffrey L. Esser Career Development Scholarship will significantly reduce the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies. Beyond the financial support, this scholarship offers an incredible opportunity to learn from and network with experts across the nation. I am truly honored and thankful to GFOA for investing in my professional development.
