Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?

I decided to pursue a master's degree in accounting to further specialize in public sector financial management. My focus is on understanding the complexities of budgeting, auditing, and financial reporting within government entities. I chose this topic because of my firsthand experience at the County of Riverside, where I witnessed the critical role that sound financial practices play in delivering public services. I am passionate about addressing the unique challenges governments face, such as funding constraints and regulatory compliance, and I believe that deepening my knowledge in this area will enable me to contribute more effectively to improving financial systems and policies in the public sector.

What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?

While working for the County of Riverside, Auditor-Controller’s Office, I have gained invaluable experience in governmental accounting and auditing. In the future, I aspire to work at the state or federal level, where I can apply my expertise to larger-scale financial challenges and policy-making. Ultimately, my goal is to be at the forefront of initiatives that promote fiscal responsibility, transparency, and efficiency in government operations.

What are your future career goals?

My future career goals include becoming a leader in governmental finance, where I can influence policies and practices that ensure fiscal sustainability and accountability. I aim to advance to a senior-level position within a government agency where I can contribute to shaping financial policies that impact communities. In these roles, I hope to implement innovative financial strategies, improve internal controls, and enhance transparency in public sector operations. Additionally, I aspire to mentor emerging professionals in governmental finance, sharing my knowledge and experience to cultivate the next generation of leaders in this field. Ultimately, I want to leave a lasting impact by contributing to the development of financial systems that serve the public good.

How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?

The GFOA scholarship will provide me with the financial support necessary to pursue advanced training and certifications in governmental finance, which are critical to achieving my career goals. By alleviating the financial burden of continuing education, the scholarship will allow me to focus on deepening my expertise and achieving advanced certifications, such as CPA license. Additionally, GFOA’s network and resources will connect me with industry leaders and best practices, further enhancing my professional development. This support will enable me to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to advance into leadership roles and make meaningful contributions to the field of governmental finance.
