Q & A with Keri

Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?

I am currently pursuing my Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Bethune-Cookman University, with plans to graduate in the fall of 2026. I chose this program because it aligns with my professional goal of becoming a strategic leader in public finance. The MBA curriculum provides advanced knowledge in financial management, budgeting, and leadership—skills that are critical to succeeding in government roles. My undergraduate degree in accounting gave me a strong foundation, but I wanted to expand my expertise in areas like organizational management and economic policy. This program offers both academic rigor and a community-centered focus, which supports my passion for public service.

What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?

I currently work for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, a government entity responsible for managing airports and related infrastructure in the Jacksonville area. I am proud to serve in a role that supports both economic development and public service. In the future, I hope to continue advancing within this organization or another governmental agency in a leadership finance role. My goal is to remain in public service, helping to ensure financial accountability and efficiency in local government. I am especially passionate about transportation and infrastructure development, and I hope to contribute to projects that improve community connectivity and regional growth.

What are your future career goals?

My long-term career goal is to become a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) within a government agency, where I can lead financial strategy and ensure sound fiscal practices. I am committed to public service and want to use my skills to improve transparency, budgeting, and resource allocation in the public sector. As I grow professionally, I also hope to mentor and inspire other women and minorities interested in careers in government finance. In the shorter term, I aim to take on more leadership responsibilities at the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, possibly managing large-scale infrastructure budgets or participating in strategic planning initiatives that directly impact the community.

How will GFOA’s scholarship help you achieve those goals?

The GFOA scholarship would be an incredible support system in helping me reach my educational and professional goals. Financial assistance from GFOA would reduce the financial burden of pursuing my MBA, allowing me to focus more on my coursework and professional development. Additionally, being recognized by a respected organization like GFOA would open doors to valuable networking opportunities, mentorship, and resources within the government finance community. The scholarship would not only help me complete my degree but also position me to take on greater responsibilities in public finance and contribute meaningfully to my organization and the community I serve.
