Lina Alam is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at Arizona State University, with a focus on effective governance, policy analysis, and leadership. With a background in mathematics and extensive experience in accounting and finance, she has developed a strong analytical skill set that is helpful in making data-driven decisions. Her work as an Accounting Administrator at the City of Chandler has provided the opportunity to oversee cash management, accounts receivable, and lead a team of professional accountants. Lina is deeply passionate about improving public sector operations, especially in the areas of financial management and policy implementation. As she continues to grow academically and professionally, the goal is to contribute to sustainable public policy that enhances economic stability and equity. Where and what are you currently studying, and why did you choose this?
I am currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at Arizona State University because I have always been passionate about public service and making a meaningful impact in my community. With over 18 years of experience in finance and accounting within the public sector, I have gained valuable insights into government operations, budgeting, and financial management. Earning this degree will strengthen my leadership skills and policy knowledge, allowing me to take on greater responsibilities and contribute more effectively to transparent, accountable, and efficient governance. This program is a crucial step in preparing me for leadership roles where I can drive positive change in public administration.
What government are you working in or hope to work at in the future?
I currently work in the Accounting Department for the City of Chandler, where I oversee cash management and accounts receivable. My experience in public finance has given me a deep understanding of government operations and fiscal management. Looking ahead, I aspire to take on a broader leadership role, such as deputy city manager or director of finance, where I can contribute to strategic decision-making, enhance financial sustainability, and improve resource allocation. I am particularly interested in working at the municipal or county level, where I can help shape policies that drive efficiency, accountability, and community engagement.
What are your future career goals?
I aspire to grow into a leadership role where I can make a meaningful impact on local government operations and financial strategy. My goal is to drive innovative budgeting practices, improve financial transparency, and develop policies that enhance service delivery. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to bridge the gap between financial management and community needs, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to support sustainable growth and public trust. In the long run, I hope to contribute to shaping policies that foster economic resilience and equitable access to government services.

The GFOA scholarship will allow me to focus more on my academic pursuits and reduce financial stress, enabling me to excel in my studies.
