U.S. DOT Announces Funding for Major Infrastructure Projects
On June 27, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced applications for the next round of funding for the Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant (MPDG) program are now being accepted. The MPDG program essentially established a single Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for three major discretionary grant programs – the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) program, the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program, and the Rural Surface Transportation Grant (Rural) program. The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm (EDT) on August 21, 2023.

The funding available for this round includes:

  • $1.8 billion for the Mega program which supports large, complex projects that are difficult to fund by other means and are likely to generate national or regional economic, mobility, or safety benefits.
  • $3.1 billion for the INFRA program to provide competitive grants to multimodal freight and highway projects of national or regional significance to improve the safety, accessibility, efficiency, and reliability of the movement of freight and people in and across rural and urban areas.
  • $675 million for the Rural program to support projects that improve and expand the nation’s surface transportation infrastructure in rural areas to increase connectivity, improve the safety and reliability of the movement of people and freight, and generate regional economic growth and improve the quality of life.
