CPFO Program for State and Provincial Associations

CPFO Program for State and Provincial Associations

State and provincial associations are crucial partners in helping grow and maintain GFOA’s CPFO program. Below are some resources for state and provincial representatives to use to help educate their members about becoming a CPFO.

Enrollment Scholarships

Each association can award two CPFO enrollment scholarships per year (i.e., every twelve months: calendar, fiscal, or other) to their members. Please see the full details on this page.

Approved Test Provider (Reciprocity) Programs

GFOA partners with associations that have established CGFO programs or are interested in developing a state-specific exam that can be delivered through our testing platform, Pearson Vue. Please see the CPFO Candidate Policy guide for additional details (section 3.6).

Current State Associations

In 2024, Florida GFOA (FGFOA) became an approved test provider. For FGFOA CGFOs, they can waive three of the seven CPFO exams and only need to pass the four remaining exams to earn the CPFO credential. More details about the FGFOA reciprocity are available here.

Informational Webinars

Throughout the year, CPFO staff are available to deliver informational webinars about the CPFO program. The webinars can be between 15-45 minutes depending on your webinar schedules.

Candidate Training Information

All CPFO candidates receive access to a CPFO Prep product with practice tests, study guides, resources, and over 130 hours of recorded eLearning Courses that serve as study materials for the CPFO exams. In addition, they have access to a CPFO Candidate community on GFOA’s Community platform to share study tips and connect with other candidates. They also receive credits and discounts that can be used towards live eLearning courses. The program is designed to be self-study and guided, but candidates are welcome to create study groups with other candidates.

State and provincial association representatives can request access to the CPFO Prep product to learn more.

Annual Reporting for CPFOs

CPFOs who earned the designation after 1/1/2021 are required to maintain their designation by completing 15 education credits and 3 engagement credits per year. They also pay an annual fee of $175, which includes eLearning course credits and discounts. Please see this reporting page for details.

Legacy CPFOs follow the reporting requirements originally created when the program was launched in 1999 (they can opt-in to the new requirements). They report 30 CPEs per year. Please see this page for details. The legacy requirements are available to CPFOs who earned the CPFO before 12/31/2020.
