This month we're highlighting WPFN Member Syiisha Dale, senior accounting manager for Mecklenburg County Government, North Carolina.
How has someone in the public finance community helped you rise in your career—and how do you pay that forward? Throughout my career, in both the private and public finance sectors, I’ve worked alongside inspiring individuals who have helped shape my professional journey. One mentor who was particularly instrumental was William Spencer, who was my manager for about six months. In that short time, he helped me recognize that my skillset was stronger and broader than I had given myself credit for. He encouraged me to trust my judgment and gave me the confidence to take on challenges I might have otherwise avoided.
I pay that forward by being a mentor and a resource to my team. I strive to help my team members not only strengthen their skills but also envision the next step in their careers. Whether it’s identifying areas for growth or simply reminding them of the strengths they already possess, I see it as my responsibility to invest in others the way I have been invested in. For me, helping someone unlock their confidence and prepare for new opportunities is one of the most rewarding parts of leadership.
What’s one way you build or contribute to community—at work or outside of it? I was raised on the belief that “to whom much is given, much is required,” and for me, that means giving back to my community through consistent service. One service initiative I’m especially proud to be part of is my work with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I serve as co-chair of my chapter’s scholarship committee, where I’ve helped oversee the distribution of more than $50,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Facilitating that initiative has been deeply meaningful to me because it not only supports students reaching their goals, but it reminds me of the importance of investing in the next generation and creating opportunities that change lives.
In my professional life, I extend that same spirit of service by acting as a resource to other departments, mentoring entry-level employees, and ensuring our customers receive excellent service. One of the greatest rewards of working and volunteering in public service is seeing the direct impact of my efforts in the community.
What activity, hobby, or interest helps you recharge and show up strong for others? Traveling is one of my favorite ways to recharge. Whether it’s a long vacation to a tropical destination or a quick weekend getaway, it allows me to reset, gain perspective, and return energized and focused. I also enjoy crocheting, which allows me to slow down, be creative, and give my mind a break. They both help me maintain balance and show up fully for the people and causes I care about.
