This month, we’re highlighting WPFN Member Madelyn Calvert. Madelyn serves as finance & grants manager for the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization of Melbourne, Florida.
How has someone in the public finance community helped you rise in your career and how do you pay that forward?
Someone in the public finance community who helped shape my career was a colleague and mentor who consistently modeled integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment to public service. By watching how she approached challenges, with strategic thinking, patience, and purpose, I learned how to manage complexity with confidence and uphold high standards in my own work. Her example inspired me to raise the bar for myself and take the initiative in advancing my career.
I pay that forward by contributing to a culture of collaboration and shared knowledge. In my current role, I make a point to bring others into the conversation, share tools and insights, and ensure transparency in decision-making. Whether it's improving processes, offering support during high-pressure projects, or simply creating space for others’ ideas, I try to foster the same environment of trust and excellence that helped me succeed.
What’s one way you build or contribute to community, at work or outside of it?
One way I contribute to community is by creating spaces for collaboration and connection, whether in the workplace or through volunteer involvement. At work, I make an intentional effort to bring people together to share ideas, celebrate milestones, and support one another, especially during high-pressure periods. Outside of work, I make a conscious effort to connect with my neighbors and local groups, supporting community events and initiatives simply by participating and encouraging others to get involved. By being an engaged and supportive presence, I help strengthen the sense of belonging and trust that make communities thrive.
What activity, hobby, or interest helps you recharge and show up strong for others?
Spending time hiking and exploring the outdoors helps me recharge and return energized to support others. Being in nature allows me to disconnect from daily stresses, clear my mind, and gain fresh perspective. The physical activity and peaceful environment boost my energy and resilience, so I can approach challenges with focus and patience.
That time outside reminds me how vital safe, accessible spaces are for everyone, whether it’s a trail, sidewalk, or neighborhood street. It deepens my understanding of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization’s mission to plan a transportation system that works for all modes, not just cars. These outdoor moments keep me balanced, focused, and ready to show up fully for the communities we serve.
