Job Description

Johnson County, Kansas seeks a strategic, service focused public finance leader to serve as the Director of Taxation, Treasury, and Vehicles. As part of one of the nation’s premier counties, the Director will lead high impact, citizen facing operations across office functions of the County Clerk, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds and Department of Motor Vehicles; overseeing 100+ employees and a $12.4M budget.

This executive role directs complex financial, operational, and regulatory functions including land records, property tax calculation and fund distribution, motor vehicle titling and registration, and financial reporting for the County. The Director provides strategic planning and policy leadership, represents the County across committees and professional organizations, and drives a culture of service excellence, compliance, and organizational performance.

The ideal candidate is a strategic, service-minded executive capable of leading complex, high-impact operations with strong experience in tax administration, financial reporting, land records and motor vehicle operations. They excel at delivering efficient, customer-focused services across high-volume divisions.

Qualified candidates will have 15 years of progressive experience in the administration of complex processes and management, collection, and financial reporting, plus 12 years of progressive leadership experience in strategic planning, goal setting and complex decision-making; 10 years of customer service experience interacting and engaging with the taxpaying public. Preferred experience in the creation and calculation of tax rolls and distribution of taxes. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, public administration or a related field, with a master’s degree preferred. A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.
