Affinity Group Leadership Opportunities

Take the Next Step in Your GFOA Involvement Through Affinity Group Leadership

GFOA Affinity Groups exist to foster connection, amplify diverse voices, and promote the networking, professional development, and issue advocacy of members with shared interests, identities, or professional focuses. The groups are designed to create meaningful peer communities, offer leadership development opportunities, and contribute to GFOA’s broader mission through programming and engagement.

Current GFOA Affinity Groups include:

GFOA active government members are eligible to participate in the Affinity Groups. There are no additional dues or qualifications required.

Leadership Structure and Terms

Leadership for each GFOA Affinity group will consist of a Chair, Vice Chair, and Advisory Group (Affinity Group Leadership). The Vice Chair serves a one-year term. At the end of the term, the Vice Chair shall assume the position of Chair for an additional one-year term. Advisory Group members serve two-year terms. Terms for advisory group members will be staggered to promote continuity. 

Leadership Applications

The application window for leadership opportunities will open in July 2026 for most affinity groups. Applications to serve in leadership roles in the Alliance for Smarter School Spending and Community for Canadian Issues will open in November 2025
