#GFOA2026: Key Sessions Announced
We’re excited to announce the first release of sessions for GFOA’s 120th Annual Conference, taking place June 28 to July 1 in Chicago. From core public finance fundamentals to advanced strategies and emerging issues, this year’s sessions deliver practical insight from peers and experts across the public finance profession.
Awards for Excellence Winner: City of Lethbridge, Alberta
In 2020, the City of Lethbridge approved its first financial reserve policy to strengthen the long-term management of reserves and support financial stability and flexibility. The policy established separate reserve funds, each with a defined purpose and funding source, helping the city respond to changing economic conditions while ensuring the continuity of essential services for the community. In 2025, the policy was amended to incorporate strategic reserves, setting clear expectations for their use and reinforcing the city’s ability to mitigate financial shocks from unforeseen events across its multi-year operating budget.
"No Tax on Overtime" FAQs Published
GFOA’s Federal Liaison Center team has published a new series of FAQs related to implementation of the new, temporary “No Tax on Overtime” deduction and the applicability of Fair Labor Standards Act requirements. Although the IRS has granted government employers with relief from separately reporting FLSA-qualified overtime in 2025, employers will need to begin accounting for deductible overtime in 2026 to meet statutory reporting requirements.

CPFO Spotlight
Cassandra Sandusky
Cassandra Sandusky, principal accountant for the Sedgwick County Division of Finance in Kansas, pursued the CPFO certification after discovering the program through GFOA resources and valuing its flexible, self-paced structure. The process expanded her perspective beyond accounting and financial reporting, helping her better understand how all areas of public finance connect and reinforcing the importance of clear communication and policy. Earning the CPFO has increased leadership trust in her abilities and positioned her for more strategic, big-picture work. She encourages others to take their time with the program, noting that its practical, job-focused content is directly applicable to local government finance.
