Job Description: 


This position is responsible for performing advanced accounting duties in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other accounting procedures applicable to the Town of Smyrna. This position provides technical expertise in governmental accounting. Primary duties include performing financial statement compilation, maintaining the accuracy and professional integrity of the Town of Smyrna’s operations, recommending and updating of accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) financial pronouncements, and providing detailed analysis and reports to assist in the preparation of the Town’s operating and capital budgets and the Town’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).

  • Collects, analyzes and evaluates financial data from a variety of sources
  • Ensures all transactions comply with accounting and tax policies, procedures, laws, rules and regulations
  • Maintains direct relationship with external audit during audit of the preparation of the Town’s annual audit
  • Performs audits of documents to ensure proper accounting of funds
  • Provides recommendations, guidance and direction to management for the purpose of understanding, meeting functional and operational goals and objectives
  • Provide back-up support for the Business Office operations
  • Provide back-up support for payroll, bank reconciliations and miscellaneous billing functions
  • Provides support in preparation of Town’s CAFR and Annual Budget
  • Provides support in Accounts Payable transactions
  • Prepares General Ledger adjustments
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


  • Knowledge of principles and practices of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of analyzing financial systems to identify accounting control risks and weaknesses, variances, trends and discrepancies
  • Knowledge of auditing procedures and budgetary processes
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in financial and accounting data analysis
  • Knowledge of office operations, business practices, use of computer and electronic spreadsheet applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must project a professional, image to create a sense of confidence in the public
  • Ability to interact with the public and other employees pleasantly, with courtesy and patience to foster an effective, efficient, professional workplace


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Accounting from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Three (3) years experience in governmental accounting which includes analyzing, recording and reporting financial transactions for governmental organizations and interpreting Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Working knowledge and three (3) years of experience in preparing financial statements such as balance sheets, statement of net assets, statement of revenues, expenditures and changes in fund balances and Statement of Cash Flows; preferred experience at the municipal or county government level is desired.


  • Possession of CPA certification preferred
