1. Why did you want to become a CPFO?

I wanted to gain a credible level of knowledge about local government finance, to supplement my MPA and background in city management. Studying the CPFO curriculum seemed like the perfect way to prepare me for an upcoming opportunity as finance director. And it was. Also, I thought having the letters “CPFO” after my name would be a good credential, which they have been.

2. What did you learn going through the process?

A ton, about everything from fund accounting and GASB to debt instruments and fixed income investments and more. I met other CPFO candidates along the way, so we encouraged each other and shared ideas.

3. How has becoming a CPFO made an impact on you in your profession?

The CPFO designation has helped me gain job interviews and job offers and build a reputation for professionalism and competence. I like the fact that the CPFO is a national certification.

4. What would you say to others thinking about becoming a CPFO?

Do it! You will gain technical knowledge, a wider network, and enhanced credibility.
