Program Description:
The response to COVID-19 for organizations and employees to work remotely has forced state and local governments to transition to remote business operations. COVID-19 has not only forced employees to work from home but also forced organizations to rethink their business processes that require access to the office or involve large amounts of paper. This session will highlight GFOA’s recent Fiscal First Aid report on opportunities for governments to move away from paper-based business processes.

This session will provide examples where organizations can reduce paper immediately and also in the long term. Key components of the session will include:

  • Review of DIY (Do It Yourself) opportunities that can be easily implemented;
  • Review of COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) solutions to reduce paper and improve business processes;
  • Review of the eight opportunities to reduce paper;
  • Case study of the City of Johnson City, Tennessee;
  • Demonstration of Wufoo form builder tool; and
  • Review of security considerations local governments should address.
Seminar Objectives:
Those who successfully complete this seminar should be able to:
  • Identify approaches and techniques to reduce paper and improve business processes;
  • Understand how the use of technology can reduce the reliance on paper; and
  • Communicate how a local government quickly reduced their reliance on a paper-based process with technology.
