If so, we invite you to apply for the position of Accountant for the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD).

Regional Government Services and its staff are conducting this recruitment on behalf of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District.

As an Accountant, you will play a critical role within the Administrative Services Department, ensuring the financial integrity of our District and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Responsibilities will include fund accounting, reconciliation of financial records, and managing payroll processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide professional and technical assistance to the CFO and District members.
  • Ensure the integrity of the general ledger through evaluation and analysis of transactions.
  • Perform routine monthly and annual general ledger closings.
  • Manage and process payroll for District employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in preparing the District's annual and mid-year budget adjustments.
  • Prepare various financial reports and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Aid in the preparation of annual financial statements, including the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
  • Serve as a financial resource to various divisions and the CFO.
  • Maintain and reconcile ledgers, reports, and account records.
  • Monitor compliance with District policies related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and fixed assets.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to District staff on financial accounting matters.
  • Assist in conducting audits and preparing necessary reports.

  • Have financial software experience with Tyler Munis (or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT:

The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District was established in 1978 to conserve and augment water supplies within the District’s service area through integrated management of surface and ground water. In addition, the District promotes water conservation and reclamation and works to prevent degradation of the area’s natural resources, repairing, improving, and augmenting the environment along local streamside habitats.

The Water Management District serves approximately 114,000 people within the cities of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Del Rey Oaks, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Sand City, Pebble Beach, Carmel Highlands, and Carmel Valley. Our sources of revenue include, but are not limited to, property tax, user fees, water connection charges, investments, grants, permit fees and project reimbursements.

The District employs twenty-six full-time staff members with its main office in Monterey, situated at Ryan Ranch. The District also operates the Sleepy Hollow Steelhead Rearing Facility in Carmel Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a government or fund-based accounting setting.
  • Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Salary and Benefits

  • The starting salary will be commensurate with the experience, qualifications, and skills of the successful candidate and with a salary range of $99,769.68 - $121,270.80 Annually DOE/DOQ.
  • Retirement - CalPERS Retirement Plan, 2%@55 for Classic members and 2%@62 for PEPRA Members
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Insurance - MPWMD covers 95% of the premium for employees and qualified dependents.
  • Life Insurance – MPWMD covers 100%
  • Short-Term Disability – MPWMD covers 50%
  • Long-Term Disability – MPWMD pays 100%
  • Vacation – Classic: Ten (10) days per year, fifteen (15) days per year after 1 year of service, twenty (20) days per year after 5 years or service; PEPRA: Ten (10) days per year for the first 3 years of service, with progressive increase up to Twenty (20) days per year after 8 years of service
  • Holidays – Eleven (11) recognized paid holidays, two (2) personal days, and six (6) management leave days per year.
  • Sick Leave – Twelve (12) days of sick leave per year
  • Deferred Compensation – Employee funded 457 plan available.
  • Flexible Schedule/Remote Work - options to be determined with direct supervisor.

  • Remote Screen Interview Exam and Technical Skills Evaluation – (100%) Candidates who pass the MQ assessment may be invited to a Remote Screen Interview and Technical Skills Evaluation for the position. This evaluation will be conducted via a video conference platform, may be conducted over one to two meetings, and is tentatively scheduled to be concluded by August 26, 2024.

The District will tentatively hold hiring interviews on August 29, 2024.
